9/5/04 - Glenshee held its very first “Hack & Hunt” event on Sunday, September 5th. In the traditional spirit of old-fashioned hunter shows, our event was held on a seven acre outside course over varied terrain with fences designed to simulate natural obstacles from the hunt field. These included the usual gates, rails, stone and brick walls as well as water, fallen trees and banks. To add to the fun, we included ribbons, prizes, and a barbecue at the end of the festivities. We ran three divisions at different levels of difficulty. The courses consisted of straightforward “hunter” courses and “handy hunter” rounds in which riders were asked to negotiate a more technical course including rollback turns, broken lines, in-and-outs and trot fences, as well as halt, rein back, dismount and mount, lead over a fence, stand quietly on a loose rein and open a gate from horseback. For the under saddle portion of each division, riders were asked to show individually, executing a simple pattern similar to low-level dressage tests to demonstrate their horses’ manners, balance, and way of going in both directions of the ring. Despite the chilly, overcast day, we had an excellent turnout and were impressed with the way everyone - including the horses - tackled the terrain, the new fences and the tests. Even though some of them had never jumped in an open field before, all of our entrants performed brilliantly!!! To top it all off, one of our resident foxes made an appearance during a break between “handy hunter” rounds, trotting along the tree line by the water obstacle and pausing for a while to watch the next round get under way. Nothing could have been more fitting for our hunting theme, and we took it as an endorsement of the day’s event.

The brisk day definitely added to the challenge, but the weather held out and a great day was had by all! Thanks again to Jackie Kahnert and the horseshow staff (especially Aleen!) for all of their help and hard work. 6/13/04 - Halestarr, owned by Arlene Elliott and ridden by Jacquie Elliott, finished 3rd in the Training Level 1/Open and 2nd in the Training Level 2/Open at the Windy Hollow Hunt’s Dressage Show at the Sussex County Fairgrounds. Halestarr has made his career primarily as a Working Hunter. After a season as a field hunter, this was his first show in over 5 years, and his first dressage show ever! Thanks so much to Jackie Kahnert for volunteering her excellent skills as a reader, co-pilot and all-around dressage encyclopedia.
